On the ninth of Chaitra's bright fortnight, at midday, Rama was born to Kaushalya and Dasharatha — dharma taking a human walk. Temples sing the Ramayana; homes rock a cradle at noon.
Ayodhya answers the noon with lakhs at the Saryu, and the south answers differently — with Sita-Rama Kalyanam, the wedding performed as the day's face. Both are right about him: Rama is worshipped less for his power than his conduct — the avatar who proved divinity by keeping every promise a man can keep.
