Panchang

Today's panchang

The five limbs of the Hindu day, sunrise and sunset, and the day's timings, computed for the city you choose.

The five limbs

Tithi
Paksha
Nakshatra
Yoga
Karana
Weekday

Month and year

Lunar month
Samvatsara

Which calendar do you follow?

The bright fortnight is named the same everywhere. A dark fortnight belongs to one month in the north and to the month before it in Maharashtra, Gujarat and the south: the same night, two true names. Saved only on this device.

Sun and Moon

Sunrise
Sunset
Moonrise
Moonset

Timings of the day

Rahu Kalam
Yamaganda
Gulika Kalam
Abhijit muhurta

The limbs are given as they stand at local sunrise, the traditional reference point. The time beside each is when it ends.

Computed on our server from the positions of the Sun and Moon (the VSOP87 and Meeus series with the Lahiri ayanamsa), the method behind the printed almanacs. Times are rounded to the minute and can differ by a minute or two from a printed panchang; in our checks the tithi and nakshatra boundaries agreed with Drik Panchang to within about a minute. Moonrise and moonset are those of the civil date, midnight to midnight. Dates from 1950 to 2099.

The city you choose is saved only on this device.

What these words mean
  • Tithi: a lunar day, one thirtieth of the Moon's cycle, counted from the new moon through the bright fortnight (Shukla) and from the full moon through the dark fortnight (Krishna). Festivals follow the tithi, which is why their dates move on the Gregorian calendar.
  • Nakshatra: the Moon's station among 27 divisions of the sky. It changes about once a day.
  • Yoga: one of 27 combinations of the Sun's and Moon's positions, consulted when choosing a time.
  • Karana: half a tithi. Eleven names cycle through the month.
  • Rahu Kalam: about an eighth of the daylight hours, roughly ninety minutes, that tradition avoids for beginning new work; where it falls depends on the weekday. Yamaganda and Gulika Kalam are two more such windows. Abhijit, around midday, is the favourable one.
  • Lunar month: the bright fortnight has one name everywhere. The dark fortnight belongs to one month in the north (purnimanta) and to the month before it in Maharashtra, Gujarat and the south (amanta). Both names are right; the switch above only chooses which to show.
  • Samvatsara: the year's name in the sixty-year cycle, given here by the southern (Shalivahana Shaka) convention, with the Shaka year.
