Ram Navami puja

Chaitra Shukla Navami (15 Apr 2027)

In the simplest words

Celebrating Ram's noon birth at home — a small cradle, the Ramraksha or Ramayana verses, and panakam or panjiri for prasad.

Rama was born at noon — so his puja gathers toward midday, with the jhula (cradle) rocked, the name sung, and the Manas or Ramayana opened. His worship has one specialty: it is kept as much by conduct as by ritual, for maryada is his form.

Valmiki names the moment — Chaitra Navami, the Punarvasu nakshatra, the Karkata lagna (Bala Kanda, sarga 18); Tulsidas adds the hour, midday, in the Manas. Rama is the avatar of exactness: dharma done completely, at the right time, without noise.

Perform this puja

5 steps, one at a time, with the lamp, the mantras and the bell — on this screen.

Samagri — what you need

0/5 gathered

The vidhi, step by step

0/5 done
  1. Morning sthapana

Bathe the murti (or wipe the image), dress in yellow, chandan-akshat tilak, the yellow flowers offered, diya and dhoop lit; set the jhula if you keep one.

  2. Vrat & path

Many keep a fruit fast till noon. Read from Balkand — the birth passages — or any beloved kand; the Ramraksha Stotra if your family recites it.

  3. Madhyahna janma-utsav

At noon — the janma moment — the jhula rocked, 'Bhaye pragat kripala' sung where known, the panakam and naivedya offered, then the aarti.

    श्री राम जय राम जय जय राम

Śrī Rāma Jaya Rāma Jaya Jaya Rāma

Revered Rama — victory to Rama, victory, victory to Rama. Thirteen syllables and only three words among them: an honorific, a name, and jaya. The jaap does not describe Rama and does not petition him; it takes his side. Each repetition is the heart declaring, once more, which way it wants the battle inside itself to go.

  4. Rama Gayatri

Eleven rounds for the household's steadiness in dharma.

    ॐ दाशरथये विद्महे सीतावल्लभाय धीमहि । तन्नो रामः प्रचोदयात् ॥

Oṁ dāśarathaye vidmahe sītā-vallabhāya dhīmahi, tanno rāmaḥ pracodayāt

We know the son of Dasharatha; we meditate on the beloved of Sita; may Rama impel us. Both epithets are relational — son, husband — because Rama's divinity is shown entirely inside human bonds kept perfectly. To be impelled by him is to be moved toward exactly that: dharma not as rule-keeping but as love bearing its full weight.

  5. Hanuman completes it

No Rama puja closes without his doorkeeper — a short Hanuman jaap and the prasad shared.

    ॐ हं हनुमते नमः

    Oṁ Haṁ Hanumate Namaḥ

Om — Ham — salutations to Hanuman. Ham is the seed-syllable tradition attaches to his name; it is also the out-breath of the haṁsa breath-mantra, which suits the son of the wind. The bija form of his mantra is used when what is needed is not a story but a surge — one syllable, repeated until fear runs out of air.

Note: Ayodhya keeps lakhs at the Saryu today; South temples celebrate Sita-Rama kalyanam instead — the wedding as the day's face. Both are old and right.
