The story & purpose
As Navratri closes in the south, the last three days belong to Saraswati — and on Mahanavami everything one works with is laid before her: ledgers and laptops, lathes and ladles, veenas, scooters, tractors, surgical kits. The tools then rest until the next day, Vijayadashami, on which the story recalls Arjuna retrieving his weapons from the shami tree after the year in disguise.
Vijayadashami morning is Vidyarambham in Kerala and beyond: thousands of children write their first letters in rice or sand, guided by an elder's hand. Work rested, work resumed — with the goddess's name on it.

Implements cleaned and arranged before the deity the previous evening with vibhuti-kumkum.

Puffed rice, jaggery, payasam; a pumpkin broken before vehicles by custom.
