In the simplest words
Books get a holiday ON the altar: keep them by the goddess, offer yellow flowers, and ask for a clear head before exams.
The goddess of vak and veena is worshipped with the tools of one's own learning laid before her — books, pens, instruments, laptops. Yellow is her spring colour; clarity is her blessing; and the puja's finest naivedya is a genuine hour of study after it.

Ganesha first
A short Ganapati jaap opens the sitting.
ॐ गं गणपतये नमः
Oṁ Gaṁ Gaṇapataye Namaḥ
Om — Gam — salutations to Ganapati, lord of the ganas. The ganas are the hosts that attend Shiva; devotional commentators widen the word to every ordered set of forces in the world — and Ganapati is the intelligence that marshals them. The mantra is a request in miniature: let what stands in the way step aside, and let what scatters come into order.

Avahan with the white-lotus dhyana
Recite Ya Kundendu — the goddess white as jasmine and moon — and offer chandan, akshat, and the flowers.
या कुन्देन्दुतुषारहारधवला या शुभ्रवस्त्रावृता । या वीणावरदण्डमण्डितकरा या श्वेतपद्मासना । या ब्रह्माच्युतशङ्करप्रभृतिभिर्देवैः सदा वन्दिता । सा मां पातु सरस्वती भगवती निःशेषजाड्यापहा ॥
Yā kundendu-tuṣāra-hāra-dhavalā yā śubhra-vastrāvṛtā, yā vīṇā-vara-daṇḍa-maṇḍita-karā yā śveta-padmāsanā, yā brahmācyuta-śaṅkara-prabhṛtibhir devaiḥ sadā vanditā, sā māṁ pātu sarasvatī bhagavatī niḥśeṣa-jāḍyāpahā
She who is white as the jasmine flower, the moon, and a garland of snow; who is robed in white; whose hands are graced by the veena; who is seated on a white lotus; whom Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva and all the gods forever praise — may that Saraswati, remover of all dullness, protect me. Every image is white on white — jasmine, moon, snow, robe, lotus — because what the verse finally asks, the removal of jadya (dullness), needs a mind first shown what unclouded looks like.

The Aim jaap
108 of her bija-mantra — students often keep count on their own fingertips.
ॐ ऐं सरस्वत्यै नमः
Oṁ Aiṁ Sarasvatyai Namaḥ
Om — Aim — salutations to Saraswati. Aim is the seed of vak, articulate speech: the sound from which expression unfolds. The reciter asks the goddess of the flowing stream of knowledge for her particular gift — not information, but the clarity that lets learning move: through the mind, onto the tongue, into the work.

The yellow sweet offered; aarti sung; prasad shared — especially with anyone you study alongside.
Vidyarambha / the first hour
A child writes first letters in rice; a student begins the hardest chapter. The puja walks out of the mandir into the notebook.
Note: In Bengal and the east this is grand community Saraswati Puja with pushpanjali; in Kerala the books rest with her over Navratri instead (Puja Veypu → Vidyarambham). Both live in the festival entries.
