The story & purpose
When devas and asuras churned the ocean and the amrit-kalash rose, twelve days of divine flight followed — and four drops fell to earth: at Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik. Each hosts the Kumbh in turn as Jupiter completes its twelve-year round; when Guru enters Leo, the Godavari at Nashik becomes the amrit stream.
The akharas arrive with their peshwai processions; naga sadhus lead the amrit snans at dawn; and for months the riverbank is a temporary city of millions. To bathe once at the Kumbh, tradition holds, gathers the merit of a thousand ordinary tirthas — but its deepest sight is simpler: everything India believes, walking to the same water.
