About this mantra
The name of Hari joined to the pranava — a complete mantra in two words, used as greeting, invocation, and jaap alike.
Meaning
Hari — and Om. Hari is from the root 'to take away': the one who lifts sorrow — and, devotees add, steals hearts while at it. Joined to the pranava, the pair holds the two halves of the sacred: the absolute as pure sound, and the absolute as someone who can be loved.
When to recite it
Greeting and jaap alike — beginning mornings, exchanged in satsang, carried on the breath through the day; many use it as the doorway into longer practice.
