The story & purpose
When Brahma's fifth head spoke arrogance against Shiva, Bhairava manifested from Shiva's wrath and removed it — then walked the worlds carrying the consequence until it fell from his hand at Kashi, where he remains as kotwal, the city's police-chief: none stays in Kashi without his leave, and the fear of him unbinds all other fears.
His day is Kalashtami of Margashirsha. The dog is his vahana and messenger — feeding dogs is his dearest seva. Householders approach the gentle Batuk Bhairav form: protection asked with mustard-oil lamps, black til, and honesty about one's own time — for Kaal takes account of hours wasted and kept.
