The story & purpose
When Brahma's fifth head spoke arrogance against Shiva, Bhairava manifested from Shiva's wrath and removed it, then walked the worlds carrying the consequence until it fell from his hand at Kashi, where he remains as kotwal, the city's police-chief: none stays in Kashi without his leave, and the fear of him unbinds all other fears.

His day is Kalashtami of Margashirsha. The dog is his vahana and messenger, so feeding dogs is his dearest seva. Householders approach the gentle Batuk Bhairav form: protection asked with mustard-oil lamps, black til, and honesty about one's own time, for Kaal takes account of hours wasted and kept.
