Deep Rest

Legs up the wall, a soft fish, a butterfly lying down — poses that do you, while you do nothing.

In the simplest words

The laziest, loveliest routine: legs resting up the wall, a tiny chest-up stretch, butterfly legs while lying down, then perfectly still like a starfish. The floor does all the work — you just melt.

Legs up the wall

Breathe naturally

Hips near the wall, legs resting up it, arms open. Five minutes of gravity working for you.

What it is

Some days practice should ask for nothing. This sequence is assembled entirely from shapes the floor holds for you: the gentle inversion drains the legs, a small supported fish reopens the chest the day closed, the reclining butterfly lets the hips soften by weight alone, and shavasana — or yoga nidra, if you have twenty minutes — finishes what the shapes began. It pairs naturally with the stillness practices of the meditation section; together they are this site's deepest rest.

Where it comes from: Curated by Dharamkira from the classical poses on this page — a sequence, not a scripture.

Rounds & rhythm

Once, unhurried, in dim light; a blanket over the body helps everything let go. Follow with yoga nidra on emptier evenings.

What it is kept for

Exhaustion that sleep alone hasn't fixed, heavy-leg days, recovery evenings, the body's own repair time.

Before you practise — health first

Even resting shapes keep their rules: the wall inversion follows viparita karani's cautions, the fish stays tiny with any neck concern, and late pregnancy rests on the left side instead of flat. Comfort is the only correct depth here.

Every posture, in order

  1. Legs up the wall

    natural breath

Hips near the wall, legs resting up it, arms open. Five minutes of gravity working for you.

  2. Soft supported fish

    natural breath

A small chest lift over a folded blanket — throat open, breath wide, nothing forced.

  3. Reclining butterfly

    natural breath

Lie back, soles together, knees resting wide on cushions; hands on the belly.

  4. Shavasana

    natural breath

Utterly still, utterly held. Let the breath breathe itself until the body feels re-woven.
