In the simplest words

Arranging the lucky first sight of the year the night before — Krishna, golden konna flowers, rice, coins, mirror — then leading everyone to it at dawn, eyes closed.

The kani is a composed blessing: everything golden, full, and alive arranged before Krishna at night, so that the year's first sight — taken with eyes closed, then opened — is abundance itself. Arranging it well is the elder's art; being led to it half-asleep is the child's delight.

  1. Arrange at night

    In the uruli before Krishna: rice, then the fruits and cucumber, coconut with a small lamp or coin within, konna heaped gold, the mirror standing so the viewer enters the kani, the kodi cloth draped.

    ॐ क्लीं कृष्णाय नमः

    Oṁ Klīṁ Kṛṣṇāya Namaḥ

    Om — Kleem — salutations to Krishna. Kleem is the seed of akarshana, attraction: tradition says Krishna does not need to be reached so much as stopped being resisted, and the bija works on the resistance. His very name is glossed 'the all-attractive' — so the mantra, in full, is a consent: draw me.

  2. The lamp readied

    The nilavilakku cleaned and wicked at night; the eldest wakes first to light it before anyone sees anything.

  3. Led with closed eyes

    Each person is guided from bed to the kani with eyes closed, seated, and told — now. The first sight held a long moment: the god, the gold, one's own face among the plenty.

  4. Vishukkaineetam

    Elders press coins into younger palms with a blessing — giving as the year's first transaction.

    क्लीं कृष्णाय गोविन्दाय गोपीजनवल्लभाय स्वाहा

    Klīṁ kṛṣṇāya govindāya gopījana-vallabhāya svāhā

    Kleem — to Krishna, to Govinda, to the beloved of the gopis: svaha. The seed of divine attraction opens it and total offering closes it; between them stand three names that move from majesty (Krishna) through care (Govinda) to intimacy (the gopis' own beloved). Svaha gives the mantra its direction — everything said is also surrendered.

  5. Kani to the world

    The kani is shown to the cattle, the trees, even the well by old custom — and its fruits become the sadya. Nothing arranged is wasted; the blessing is eaten.

Note: Regional kani lists vary lovingly — some add the Ramayana, grandmother's spectacles, the season's first rain-water. Whatever your family adds is canon.
