Satyanarayan Puja & Katha

Purnima, gratitude days, housewarmings — any auspicious occasion

In the simplest words

The gratitude puja families do after good news — Vishnu as Satyanarayan, a sweet halwa prasad, and five short stories everyone listens to.

The Satyanarayan vrat is the household's thanksgiving: Vishnu worshipped as Truth itself, five short katha chapters heard together, and the famous sheera prasad shared with everyone — refusing prasad is the one mistake the katha itself warns about.

Its genius is its openness: no muhurat hunting, no priest required, no scale it must reach — any purnima, any gratitude, any living room. The katha (from the Skanda Purana's Reva khanda) repeats one homely warning five ways: the divine forgives almost everything except a promise made comfortable and then forgotten.

Perform this puja

6 steps, one at a time, with the lamp, the mantras and the bell — on this screen.

Samagri — what you need

The vidhi, step by step

  1. Setup & sankalp

Chowki with kalash and the image facing the family; all present take the sankalp together — the vrat is a family act.

  2. Ganesh & Navagraha smaran

Ganesha first; then one remembrance of the nine grahas for an unclouded occasion.

    ॐ गं गणपतये नमः

    Oṁ Gaṁ Gaṇapataye Namaḥ

Om — Gam — salutations to Ganapati, lord of the ganas. The ganas are the hosts that attend Shiva; devotional commentators widen the word to every ordered set of forces in the world — and Ganapati is the intelligence that marshals them. The mantra is a request in miniature: let what stands in the way step aside, and let what scatters come into order.

  3. Satyanarayan puja

Panchamrit touch-bath to the shaligram/image, then water; chandan, akshat, flowers — and tulsi, without which this puja is held incomplete.

    ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय

    Oṁ Namo Bhagavate Vāsudevāya

Om, I bow to Bhagavan Vasudeva. Vasudeva is Krishna as the indwelling one — from vas, to dwell: he in whom all beings live and who lives in all beings. Twelve syllables long, the mantra is the Bhagavata tradition's whole path in one line — not a request but an address: turning toward the person of the divine and handing oneself over.

  4. The katha — five chapters

Read the five chapters aloud from a katha book; all present listen with akshat or flowers in hand.

  5. Dvadashakshara jaap

A seated mala of Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya before the aarti.

6. Naivedya, aarti & prasad

Offer the sheera with a tulsi leaf and water as naivedya; dhoop and deep; then the Satyanarayan aarti. The same sheera is now prasad — to every single person present, and sent to those who could not come.

Note: Traditionally performed with a purohit on big occasions; the household form above is widely practised for monthly purnima vrats.
