Kali (Shyama, Dakshina Kali) · 45 minutes, night

Kali puja at home — the householder's Shyama

Kartik Amavasya — Diwali night (8 Nov 2026; 29 Oct 2027)

In the simplest words

Worshipping the fierce Mother gently at home — red hibiscus, honest hearts, a midnight lamp — Kali protects those who hide nothing from her.

The Mother whom Bengal calls at midnight can be worshipped at home in the pure bhakti mode — no tantric apparatus, only the child's approach that Ramakrishna showed: hibiscus if you can find them, honesty because she accepts nothing else, and her name said without fear.

Perform this puja

5 steps, one at a time, with the lamp, the mantras and the bell — on this screen.

Samagri — what you need

The vidhi, step by step

  1. Night sthapana

After the Lakshmi puja (if kept), set the Mother's image with the diya and dhoop; the house dark but for flames — her amavasya aesthetic.

  2. Flowers & sindoor

The jaba garland or loose red flowers offered; sindoor to her image, then to the household's women who wish it.

  3. The Kreem jaap

108 of her bija — steady, loving, unafraid. If fear arises, that is the ego meeting its mother; keep going gently.

    ॐ क्रीं कालिकायै नमः

    Oṁ Krīṁ Kālikāyai Namaḥ

Om — Kreem — salutations to Kalika. The seed-sound is sharp because she is: Kali is time in person, the Mother who ends what has finished so that what must live, can. Her devotees call the fierceness tenderness at full strength. The reciter bows to what is feared most — endings — and finds a mother's face on it.

  4. Ya Devi path

The tantroktam verses — the Devi saluted as consciousness, power, and peace in all beings.

    या देवी सर्वभूतेषु शक्तिरूपेण संस्थिता । नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः ॥

Yā devī sarva-bhūteṣu śakti-rūpeṇa saṁsthitā, namas tasyai namas tasyai namas tasyai namo namaḥ

To the Goddess who abides in all beings in the form of power — salutations to her, salutations to her, salutations to her, again and again. The litany's grammar is its teaching: she is not summoned from elsewhere — she is found already standing (samsthita) in every being, as power itself. The triple salute is for a presence discovered in creatures one had merely looked at until now.

  5. Bhog & aarti

Kheer or khichuri, fruit and batasha offered; aarti with camphor; Shyama-sangeet if the family sings. Prasad eaten in her dark, warm quiet.

Note: Formal Kali puja with nyasa and tantric vidhi belongs to initiated traditions and priests — this householder form is complete in itself, as Dakshineswar's own mood shows. Animal sacrifice has no place in the home rite; fruits are her bali here.
