The sister's tilak on the brother's forehead, done the Yamuna way — she fed her brother Yama once, and he promised life to all brothers so honoured.

On this dwitiya, Yamuna fed her brother Yama at her own home, and the lord of death promised: a brother honoured at his sister's hands today shall not fear untimely ending. Diwali closes not with lamps but with this — the sibling thread re-tied at a set table.

  1. The sister's threshold

    By custom the brother comes to the sister's home today — the reverse of Rakhi's direction; the visit itself is the rite's first half.

  2. Tilak & aarti

    Roli-akshat tilak, the gola placed in his palms, aarti with the thali — Yamuna's gestures repeated in every home.

    मङ्गलं भगवान् विष्णुर्मङ्गलं गरुडध्वजः । मङ्गलं पुण्डरीकाक्षो मङ्गलायतनं हरिः ॥

    Maṅgalaṁ bhagavān viṣṇur maṅgalaṁ garuḍa-dhvajaḥ, maṅgalaṁ puṇḍarīkākṣo maṅgalāyatanaṁ hariḥ

    Auspicious is Lord Vishnu; auspicious is the one whose banner bears Garuda; auspicious is the lotus-eyed one; Hari is the very abode of auspiciousness. The verse blesses by repetition — mangalam falls four times, like flowers at a threshold. It does not ask that nothing go wrong; it declares whose presence makes things go right.

  3. The meal

    The sister feeds the first bite — the mithai — by her own hand; the meal cooked with the day in mind. Yama's boon rides on this plate, says the katha.

  4. Gift & pranam

    The brother's gift to the sister; the younger's pranam to the elder; the closing prayer said together.

    त्वमेव माता च पिता त्वमेव त्वमेव बन्धुश्च सखा त्वमेव । त्वमेव विद्या द्रविणं त्वमेव त्वमेव सर्वं मम देवदेव ॥

    Tvam eva mātā ca pitā tvam eva, tvam eva bandhuś ca sakhā tvam eva, tvam eva vidyā draviṇaṁ tvam eva, tvam eva sarvaṁ mama deva-deva

    You alone are my mother and my father; you alone my kin and my friend; you alone knowledge and wealth; you are my all, O god of gods. The verse works by exhaustion: every support a human life leans on — parent, kin, friend, learning, means — is handed over one by one, until 'my everything' is not poetry but inventory. It closes worship because it is where worship arrives.

Note: Where distance separates, the tilak travels by post and the meal by video call — Yamuna will not mind. Bengal keeps the same rite as Bhai Phonta with its own dhan-durva blessing.
