About this mantra
The bīja-mantra of the Sun — first of the nine grahas, and the one the graha-shanti sequence opens with. Jyotisha counts Surya as the significator of the self, vitality, authority and the father.
Meaning
Om — with the seed-syllables hrāṁ hrīṁ hrauṁ saḥ — salutations to Surya, the Sun. In the chart the Sun stands for the soul's own fire: vitality, dignity, the father, the strength to be seen. The reciter asks that this fire burn steady — warming a life rather than scorching it.
When to recite it
Counted on Sundays and in graha-shanti where the Sun needs strengthening — flagging confidence, matters of father and authority, the start of public undertakings.
