About this mantra
Pushan — 'the nourisher' — the sixth name. In the Rig Veda, Pushan is the herdsman among the gods: keeper of roads, finder of what is lost, guide of travellers. As a name of the sun he is the ripener of grain and the guardian of every journey the day contains.
Meaning
Om, salutations to Pushan, the nourisher of all. Every meal is stored sunlight; the mantra says so in three words. The reciter bows to the sun as the quiet provider — who ripens the grain, keeps the road, and asks no thanks for either.
When to recite it
One of the twelve names of the Surya Namaskar cycle — recited one per posture at sunrise, or counted together as a Sunday (Ravivar) jaap. Remember Pushan over food and fields, before journeys, and when praying for a household's provision.
