Navagraha
Chandra — the Moon
ॐ श्रां श्रीं श्रौं सः चन्द्राय नमः
Oṁ śrāṁ śrīṁ śrauṁ saḥ candrāya namaḥ
Simple reading: Om shraam shreem shraum sah chan-draa-ya na-mah
About this mantra
The bīja-mantra of the Moon, second of the nine grahas. Jyotisha counts Chandra as the significator of the mind, the emotions, nourishment and the mother — the graha whose waxing and waning the tithi calendar follows.
Meaning
Om — with the seed-syllables śrāṁ śrīṁ śrauṁ saḥ — salutations to Chandra, the Moon. The Moon waxes and wanes, and jyotisha says the mind moves with it. The jaap asks that its tides turn gentle: emotions that move like moonlight on water, not like storm surf.
When to recite it
Mondays, and the full-moon and new-moon days; taken up in emotional turbulence, troubled sleep, and matters of the mother and the home.
