The story & purpose
Mauni Amavasya is the great snan day of Magha, when silence itself is the vrat. Mauna — from muni, the silent sage — is kept from sunrise: no speech, only japa within, so that the mind hears itself for one full day.
At Prayagraj this is the most crowded bathing day of the annual Magh Mela — and in Kumbh years, of the Kumbh itself. In the south the same new moon is Thai Amavasya, a day of tarpan for the ancestors.
What is done
Maun vrat
Silence from sunrise — for the whole day, or at least through the morning snan and japa.
Snan
Bathing in a sacred river before sunrise; at home, a few drops of Ganga jal in the bath water carry the intention.
Tarpan & daan
Water and sesame offered to the ancestors; food, blankets, and til given in charity.
Inner jaap
Soham or Om Namo Narayanaya, repeated silently — the mantra of the breath itself.

The pre-dawn and morning hours are for snan; silence is kept as long as vowed.
