The story & purpose
Maha Ashtami is the crest of the Devi Paksha: the day of Mahagauri, of astra-puja to the goddess's weapons, and — at the sandhi moment joining Ashtami to Navami — of the fierce Chamunda who felled Chanda and Munda. Bengal lights 108 lamps for the sandhi puja's forty-eight minutes.
Its most intimate rite is kanya pujan: nine girls received as the nine Durgas — feet washed, tilak, a meal of puri-halwa-chana served by the household's own hands. The theology is unsparing: reverence for the goddess is tested by reverence for girls.

In 2026 the Ashtami tithi ends at about 10:50 am on 19 Oct (Delhi) and Navami runs to about 12:50 pm on 20 Oct — many homes keep kanya pujan on either morning.
