The story & purpose
Bonalu is Telangana's Ashadha offering to Mahankali and the neighbourhood goddesses Pochamma, Yellamma and Maisamma. Women carry the bonam on their heads through the streets to the Mother's temple: a decorated pot of rice cooked with milk and jaggery, lamp burning on its lid.
The rest of the story
The word is bhojanalu, 'meals': the goddess is fed first as the family's eldest mother. Pothuraju, her brother, dances ahead of the processions; at Ujjaini Mahankali the Rangam oracle speaks the year. It grew as a vow kept since the 1813 epidemic, when the Mother was asked to heal the twin cities, and did.
