The story & purpose
Bathukamma, 'Mother Goddess, come alive', is built rather than installed: concentric rings of gunuka, tangedu, banti, and chamanti flowers stacked into a bright cone, crowned with a turmeric Gauri. Each evening women circle the flower-goddesses singing 'Bathukamma Bathukamma Uyyalo', clapping the round into being.
The rest of the story
On Saddula Bathukamma the tallest flower-goddesses are carried to tanks and rivers and floated away with maleeda sweets, the Mother returning to the waters that grew the flowers. The festival, now Telangana's state festival, is ecology as liturgy: wildflowers, water, women's voices.
